Camp Tuscazoar - Orienteering
October 5, 2013
Dover, OH
We had excellent weather and a great time during our trip to Camp Tuscazoar. A small group left right on time from the Assumption parking lot for the short ride to camp. When we arrived the first order of business was a quick check-in followed by a Pancake Breakfast with Camp Tuscazoar maple syrup. It was very good and filling. There were around 50 people participating in the Orienteering training day. Mr. Makowski led us on a quick refresher of map and compass skills before heading out. The Panthers, Dragons, and Gray Pirates (adult patrol) spent a good portion of the day navigating the woods and hills on multiple courses. For the first portion, the Dragons were assisted with using a map and compass on the White Course by Mr. Makowski and Dr. Ryan. The Panthers took Mr. Aube along on the Yellow Course. After completing these two courses we took a short break to have some snacks and rehydrate. At the end of the break the Dragons tried their hand at completing the Yellow Course on their own. For their first time without help they did pretty good by finding the first four controls and then ran into some difficulty and decided to head back to the start. After the Dragons left, the Gray Pirates challenged the Panthers to a race on the Orange Course. At one point the Panthers caught up to the Pirates near control 5. If not for the Pirates experience and use of diversionary tactics they might have gone down with the ship. However, they were able to pull ahead and finish the course 10 minutes ahead of the Panthers. Course clue sheets and individual patrol results are posted below the pictures. The overall results for all competitors can be found here. After the day's competition we went to Wendy's for lunch and then headed home. Successfully navigating their way at Camp Tuscazoar were David, John, Kyle, Michael, Scott, Mr. Aube, Mr. Makowski, and Dr. Ryan. | |
