Camp Tuscazoar - Orienteering

October 5 - 7, 2012
Dover, OH

The reason we went to camp Tuscazoar is for orienteering. What orienteering is when you have to find an object using a map and compass. There are 2 main types of orienteering courses, Cross Country and Score orienteering. Score orienteering courses are where you get to choose your own route, but with more points to find. In a Cross Country course the route is planed for you, but with fewer points to find. At camp we did both kinds of orienteering. Friday we set up as usual and had a campfire where we played a few games. On Saturday morning we cooked breakfast in camp before heading up to the orienteering starting point. There was a little training and we did a cross country orienteering course. Each of our teams had their own set of challenges while running each course and came back tired but happy. After the course there was an awesome meal of pulled pork sandwhiches in the dining hall. With lunch finished and our bellies full we worked together to build two campfires for the campwide fire in the evening. Then we headed back to camp for a short rest before taking a hike to Dover Dam. The hike wasn't too far and it was neat to check out the dam. After returning to camp there was more freetime before starting supper. The scout patrol had beef stew for their main course and the adults had chicken stir fry. That night we did the score orienteering, which was hard because it was dark. When the Night-O was completed we, troop 810, hosted a campfire for all the troops in camp. The next day we packed up camp and headed to the dining hall for an all you can eat pancake breakfast complete with Camp Tuscazoar syrup. After breakfast teams and individuals competed in a scout orienteering championship by doing cross country orienteering. There was a short awards ceremony afterwards and those competing were able to pick from an assortment of prizes. Members of our troop took 2nd place on the Yellow and Orange courses. Those finding there way on this campout were Erich, John, Mitchell, Nick, Raymond, Richard, Steven, Mr. Bailey, Mr. Boblick, Mr. Deran, Mr. Makowski, and Mr. Wrabel.
