Roscoe Village

April 13-14, 2002

Muskingum Valley Scout Reservation
Coshocton, Ohio

The trip to Historic Roscoe Village was both educational and interesting. We started out early in the morning with a two hour trip down I-77. There were overcast skies with a hint of rain now and then. Once our Troop checked into the visitor center we began the tinsmithing and rope making hands-on activity sessions. Each scout made their own ornament and contributed to making two pieces of rope. After that we were treated to a short movie depicting the history of the Ohio and Erie canal. Then began a living history tour where we learned what some of the tradesman worked at each day and what life was like in their community.

In attendance for this trip were David, Eric, Joey J., Joey P., Kyle K., Kyle T., Philip, Rob, Mr. Makowski, Mr. PiKus, Mr. Svihlik and, Mr. Thomas. We also spent some of our time camping at Muskingum Valley Scout Reservation. Most everyone was able to take a look around the camp where we will be attending summer camp this year. We wrapped up Saturday evening with a fun-filled campfire. Sunday morning had us eating breakfast and breaking camp in record time to beat the rain and head on home. Here are a few photos from the trip.

Trying their hand at being a tinsmith, each scout hammered out a pattern on a round sheet of tin.

The room we were in had many displays showing tools and articles from the past. In the background notice the rags used as insulation between the cabin logs..

Once completed a piece of ribbon was added so they could be hung like an ornament.

Our tour guide Martha shows us how to make rope. We divided into two teams and each team made a length of rope.

There's Joey being pulled in as the twine is twisted into rope.

Mr. Svihlik inspects the quality workmanship of Eric and David.

Philip steadies the paddle just before turning the twisted twine into rope. Kyle and Kyle keep winding the twine.

This is a working model of that shows how locks on the canal worked. See the small boat between the two locks?

The canal boat is now in the pond on the far end where it could turn around to go the other way.

In the blacksmiths' workshop. The blacksmith was not on the scene that day, but our guide demonstrated how implements and tools were made.

At the printer's shop everyone learned how printing was done in the 1800's. We each made a bookmark to take home.

A trip to the broom makers shop.

Getting a lesson at the one room school house.

The troop looking good at the stern of a mock canal boat.

The troop in front of a canal lock gate at the Visitor Center entrance.

Breakfast time at camp. Mr. Pikus checks out the nutritional value of mini donuts.
