Punderson State Park

April 18-19, 2008
Newbury, Ohio

The troop took a short weekend visit and camped overnight at Punderson State Park. The park has two nice group sites that scouting and other groups can use for camping. The first day we arrived early enough that there was still enough light to pitch camp. With everyone pitching in it didn't take too long for the camp to get setup. As darkness set in we built a fire and had snacks and games around the campfire. To complete a communications merit badge requirement, Kevin ran a short campfire program with a few skits, songs, and a flag retirement ceremony. After the flag ceremony it was getting late and time to hit the sack. In the morning we awoke to another great day with beautiful Spring weather. In no time at all the scouts and adults made a hearty breakfast of eggs, sausage, and orange juice in their separate kitchen areas. With breakfast completed we worked on some scout skills and advancement requirements. Then it was time for a hike through the park. The group made its way through the park's campsite area and then followed a trail down to the lake. When we arrived at the lake there were many people fishing. It turned out that a fishing derby was being held over the weekend. After a quick stop to refill our water bottles we headed down another trail to the beach area. It was fun to explore, but after a while it was time to head back to camp for lunch so off we went. The menu for lunch was steak, mashed potatoes, peas, pudding, and fruit drink. This was made from two 10 person backpacking meals and varied in degrees of tastiness. With lunch under our belt we began breaking camp. The tents came down and gear was packed into the vehicles. One final tasks for us to do was a quick service project. Most of the campsites were empty and the park staff asked us to go through the area and pick up any litter. Once that was completed we jumped in the cars and headed home. The weather was excellent during our entire stay which is not the norm for April camping. Those camping and hiking this trip were Allen, Alex, Derek, DJ, Donald, Douglas, Jacob, Kevin, Nick, Matthew B., Steven, Theo, Mr. Dzurnak, Mr. Makowski, and Mr. Mayher. Still waiting on pictures...
