Orienteering Challenge

February 8th, 2009
Cleveland Metroparks Brecksville Reservation

The weather couldn't have been better for our Orienteering Challenge on a Sunday morning in February. It was cool and sunny, but not so cold that you were chilled to the bone. There was snow on the ground and some slushy spots, but everyone was able to get around without much trouble. The challenge started with some basic map and compass instruction. We went over the parts of a compass and how to orient a map using a compass. Then we went over what the different colors and symbols mean on a topographic map.

Once the training was completed we used our map and compass to navigate to different points within the park. Everyone was given a chance to direct the group and other members would check to make sure we were headed in the right direction. Directions on where to go next were given by saying things like, "Travel to the trail junction 162 degrees nearest our current position". There were challenges given to use trails and to go off the trail and find a location based on its topographic features. Everyone enjoyed the chance to work on their orienteering skills and especially getting out into the outdoors for some morning exercise. At the end of the event we went over how to estimate height and distance using different methods. Those navigating their way were: Allen, David, Donald, Douglas, Jacob, Kevin, Matthew, Peter, Mr. Deran, Mr. Drown, Mr. Makowski, and Mr. Mayher. Sorry, no pictures this trip.
