Orienteering Event

September 8, 2002

Mill Stream Run Reservation
Cleveland Metroparks

Orienteering turned out to be a lot of fun and a real challenge. The Crows and the Cobras were given orienteering clues and a map to locate control markers in the area. Before setting out they received instruction from one of the members of the NorthEastern Ohio Orienteering Club. The course took us a lot longer than it should have because we did not mark the controls on our map using the master map. This set up a few wrong turns to make for a much longer route and won't be a mistake we make at the next event. Both patrols sucessfully completed the course with the Cobras having a better overall time than the Crows. Using their map and compass prowess to complete the course were Alex, Bradley, Eric, Joey, Justin, Kyle, Philip, Ryan, Mr. Makowski, Mr. See, Mr. Svihlik, Mr. Thomas, and Mr. Ulintz.

Trip Plan for Orienteering Event

Date and Time of Departure: Sunday, September 8th, 11:15am - near Old Church. Please be on time so we can set up our teams. We will leave 11:30am sharp, the event starts at 12:00 noon.

Purpose: The NorthEastern Ohio Orienteering Club (NEOOC) is hosting an Orienteering Event that will give us a chance to learn and test our orienteering skills. The event has a cross-country format.  This type of event consists of courses that go from location to location in a prescribed order.  A typical course has 7-10 control locations.  There is usually a 3-hour maximum time limit.  Courses are designed for various skill levels, including beginner. Participating in this event will satisfy some of your First Class requirements.

Location: Cleveland Metroparks Mill Stream Run Reservation

Cost: Bring a few dollars to help cover the registration fee and cost of maps. We will determine actual cost based on how many scouts attend and how many teams are formed. The registration fee is $5, for one individual or small group of six or less, and gets you one map.  Each registered group must have at least one individual 18 years or older.  If each registered group wishes to buy additional maps (so there is less map sharing), they are $3 per map.
