Troop 810 – Summer Camp II
July 20th – July 26th, 2008

Camp Manatoc
Peninsula, Ohio
Manatoc Gate

Once again, we went to Manatoc summer camp from Sunday, July 20th to Saturday, July 26th. As opposed to our other summer camps, Manatoc is very traditional and we’ve gone there over three consecutive times now.

Once we arrived at camp, the first thing we did, as always, was take a mandatory swim test along with getting our medical forms “in order.” Right after that, we fixed up the camp and got our stuff arranged. Interestingly enough, rather than setting up tents, we use camp provided tents as to have more sturdy shelter.

After the first day, which is the worst is over; it's smooth sailing. During the day, scouts go to merit badge “classes” (much like school) and work on requirements they need. During the time a scout isn’t at merit badges, they can get a slushy at the trading post, take a nap, or even go exploring! Some of the more exciting, and unique to summer camp, merit badges offered include swimming, hiking, rifle shooting, archery, emergency preparedness, among others. Of course, while at camp, you have a better opportunity to complete badges such as art, pottery, Indian lore, and basket weaving.

Rather than fixing our own meals, as we do on normal outings, we are served in a dining hall. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served in the same spot and are usually much better than we would have normally had, no offense to our scout cooks! Meals range from French toast to country fried steak!

At the end of camp, there is an all-camp campfire. During this fire, all the troops get together to watch skits preformed by the staff who has helped us with merit badges throughout the week and it closes with a “ceremony” in which you are taught a different part of an Indian story.

All in all, though we go to Manatoc nearly every year, it’s a different experience each year for each scout. I always have a lot of fun while there, as I know the other members of the troop do too. The members of the troop that went include: Douglas, Kevin, Steven, Matt O., Danny, Greg, Matt K., Tom, John, Matt B., Derek, Allen, Theo, Jon, David, Michael, Mr. Drown, and Mr. Mayher.
