Fun in the Sun at Camp Manatoc

Our week at Camp Manatoc started out with a beautiful, sunny day and a smooth check-in. We finished up by 3:00 PM and had time to set up our camp before going to dinner at the historic dining hall made of wormy Chestnut! After a good meal, the flag was lowered and we marched on the field for review. The evening ended with vespers and an enjoyable campfire.

On Monday everyone was ready for some adventure as they headed off for their merit badge classes, which included Horsemanship, Archery, Medicine, Environmental Science, Space Exploration, Energy, Climbing, Rifle Shooting and more. On Tuesday, the camp hosted Divine Legends of Old games. In these games, patrols competed against each other. They earned points at each station based on the most important thing, patrol spirit, and secondly, on how well they performed the game. Wednesday was family night. After the parents saw the flag lowering and the troops marching, we went to eat at a pavilion the troop reserved. The parents brought the scrumptious food. After dinner, the scouts showed their parents the camp and where their merit badge sessions were held. On Thursday, our troop did a service project for the camp by pulling out patches of Wild Garlic Mustard Seed, which is a very invasive species of plant. This helped us earn an Honor Unit 2006 Camp Ribbon for our flag. Friday was the long anticipated closing campfire. Everyone enjoyed it!

Saturday came and we were ready to go home to civilization, with flushing toilets and television. We checked out smoothly without any problems. Before the troop parted, we circled up one last time to talk about the week. We discussed what we thought were the good points and the bad points of our week at camp. Alex said the closing prayer, and off we went with home on our minds! The Fun in the Sun bunch included: Alex, Chris, DJ, Eric, Jacob, John, Jordan, Kevin, Kurtis, Matt K.(5), Matt O., Matthew, Nick, Steven, Will(1), Mr. Mayher, Mrs. Mayher, Mr. Owen, and Mr. Sewell.
