Troop 810 - Bonus Summer Camp

July 24 - July 30, 2005

Manatoc Scout Reservation
Peninsula, Ohio

The week of summer camp started wet and warm. Everybody arrived with excitement. We weren’t going to let the rain dampen our spirits. Mr. Dzurnak’s help was greatly appreciated that first day. The check-in process was challenging with the rain and thunder and lightening. We dodged the raindrops and completed the check-in process in time to make it to the evening’s supper. We met Mr. Moose, Mr. Fish, Mr. Antelope, Mr. Wild Bore and Scoutmaster Hoss in the Dining Hall. The scouts learned the importance of not wearing their hat in the dining hall. After dinner we all met for the week’s opening campfire. The campfire was huge and the ceremony was terrific!

We ended our first day tired and excited to start our Merit Badge quest. Eric, Alex, D.J. and Matt S. set their sites on the Horsemanship Merit Badge, Steven and Kevin the Climbing Merit Badge and Matt M. the Sailing Merit Badge. On Tuesday night and into Wednesday the sky opened-up again with rain, rain and rain! We hunkered down in a cabin Tuesday evening during the storm. We studied our merit badge material and enjoyed ice cream with a neighboring troop. Mr. & Mrs. Mayher “enjoyed” TA98 – Safety Afloat training on “Wet Wednesday,” sinking and unsinking a canoe on a cold rainy day on Lake Manatoc. The scouts made it through “Wet Wednesday” and enjoyed the Manatoc Staff evening entertainment on parents night. Everyone had fun seeing Mom and Dad and the wonderful eats they brought. Our hearts and stomachs were very happy, and we thank Mr. & Mrs. Dzurnak for coordinating the terrific food. Working with Mr. Brooks, Manatoc Camp Director, we as a Troop worked on the Railroading Merit Badge. We all had fun learning about trains and the railroad and enjoyed our trip on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. We wrapped-up the week of camp with a special closing campfire and ceremony. We enjoyed a Friday night visit from Mr. Svihlik and Mr. Dzurnak for the closing ceremony. The seven scouts of Troop 810 earned 32 merit badges and had fun at Camp Manatoc. We broke camp early Saturday morning with the greatly appreciated help of all the parents. In attendance were Alex, DJ, Eric, Matt , Matthew, Kevin, Steven, Mr. Dzurnak, and Mrs. Mayher & Mr. Mayher.
