Manatoc and Orienteering
May 16-17, 2003
Peninsula, OH
Our
original plans to go canoeing were once again interupted
by heavy rains earlier in the week causing red conditions
on the Mohican River. A quick trip to camp Manatoc was
put together as a replacement. The campsite was a little
soggy, but our evening of camping went smoothly with no
rain and moderate temperatures. The scouts eventually
succeeded in getting a campfire started on Friday night
adding a little atmosphere to the site. Saturday morning
found us preparing breakfast and playing capture the flag
with neighboring scouts from other packs and troops. More
of our troop showed up after breakfast and we proceeded
to tear down camp and pack up the vehicles. With our camping gear stowed we headed over to an Orienteering event being held at Virginia Kendall Lake by the NorthEastern Ohio Orienteering Club. After arriving at Virginia Kendall we decided to eat lunch before starting Orienteering. The troop split up into two patrols, half of the scouts chose the White course and those wanting more of a challenge did the Yellow course. White course participants finished quickly and waited for the group on the Yellow course to return nearly an hour and a half later. It was a good challenge and the basics of orienteering were learned. Members of the troop that camped overnight and completed orienteering were Alex, David, Nate, Philip, Ryan, Mr. Makowski, Mr. Svihlik, and Mr. Ulintz. Those who went orienteering only were Jared, Justin, Joey J., Joey P., Kyle K. and Mr. Thomas. Lastly, Kyle and Mr. See joined us Friday evening for camp setup. If anyone has more pictures please bring them to one of the troop meetings.
