Trip Plan for Laurel Caverns Caving

Date and Time of Departure: Friday, May 15th, 5:00pm - Old Church

Purpose: This three hour high adventure learning program integrates caving with the study of the flora, fauna (particularly bats), and geology of Laurel Caverns. Scouts will visit dig sites where heretofore unknown cave passages are being found and will be told the secret to the discovery of such passages. The opportunity to collect pottery clay is also a part of this program. Scouts under 12 years of age will participate in a three hour Geology merit badge program. This includes a one hour class, a one hour field walk and a one hour geology oriented cave tour. This program has no prerequisites.

Location: Camping at Camp Anawanna, 155 Plumsock Road, Amity, PA 15311

Caving at Laurel Caverns Park, 101 Skyline Drive, Farmington, PA 15437

Camp Coordinator: Mr. Deran

Cost: $50.00, permission slip, (Due by April 7th) and Lower Caving Release Form or Upper Caving Release Form (Due by May 5th)

Estimated Time of Return: Sunday, May 17th, around 11:00am - Old Church

Items to Bring:

  • Scout Outdoor Essentials (see handbook)
  • Camping Gear and Extra Clothing (see handbook)
  • This program requires participants to be 12 years of age or older and bring at least two good sources of light. Also, each must wear long pants, a long sleeved shirt, and shoes with good tread and ankle support. Laurel Caverns will supply the hard hats. Each participant must also fill out and sign a Lower Caving Release Form.
  • Scouts under 12 years of age and anyone participating in Geology merit badge need to have an Upper Caving Release Form and blue card.
