Klondike Derby

Klondike!

Down at Macedonia,
We arrived at eight thirty
Longwood Park, not so far gonia,*
In the end happy yet, dirty.

January twentieth, a Saturday,
The Eagles Assemble, as did Penguins,
Snow was high, coats kept cold at bay,
Penguins by half a point, did wins.

One event involved trees and leaves
Matching both, along with mammal and food,
Screaming Eagles and Penguins did grieve
When faced by a rope bridge crude.

Mystery Event did baffle us,
As to who should shout “lift foot!”
But none of us would never cuss
To lift foot on a plank, the other, to move forward.

Stuck in the Tundra, we built shelter and fire,
To protect comfortably, two scouts, no more
Thereafter was lunch, build a fire, I am no liar,
We fed two judges and ourselves, it was no bore.

Stranded on a sledge, we “saved” a scout,
By tying knots, and throwing and pulling
Pulled across, treat for first aid, we didn’t pout,
At this time, our patrols excelling.

Fire-building was fun, splitting wood for fuel,
Pulling a tarpaulin, blocked the wind and lo!
Ignition! Heat! And our goal was cool,
We burned the elevated sting and thus we go!

Last was the race, the big race,
Pull the sledge, patrol against patrol,
Running, dashing, shouting, cheering and yelling,
We both finished, our day done, and it was compelling!
