National Jamboree

Fort AP Hill, Virginia

July 27- August 7,2010

Five of the Scouts from Troop 810 attended the 100th Anniversary of Scouting at Fort AP Hill Virginia in July, 2010.

There were hundreds of things to do and experience and authors to meet as well such as James Patterson who wrote Daniel X.

For 100 years the letters BSA have stood for the Boy Scouts of America-a nation blessed with natural areas, small towns, cities, and spectacular landscapes. The names and patches of the 2010 National Scout Jamorbee subcamps celebrate our country and the rich variety that weaves it all together. The Cleveland contingent of almost 200 Scouts were in subcamp 13 in the Central Region and called the Wright Brothers. Ohio and West Virginia Scouts know the exploits of Orville and Wilbur Wright in launching the age of flight. Stroll through Subcamp 13 and you'll find Scouts practicing the kind of innovation and hard work that lifted the Wright Brothers' airplane into the sky.

What was there to do! Action Alley-a full obstacle course; air-rifle shooting; archery; bikathon; 5k; Buckskin games; confidence course; Motocross, Mountain boarding; Pioneering; Rapelling Tower; Trapshooting; Camp Thunder-5 stand shotgun range. Outback Fun: Conservation and fishing. Aquatics: Canoe slalom; canoe sprint; discover scuba; kayak fun; racing shell fun; raft encounter; snorkel search.

They had a daily newspaper delivered with the food they picked up at the commissary to tell them what happened the day before and what was going to happen daily which included shows at the main stage.

Saturday night they had the biggest celebration of all including Mike Rowe of "Dirtiest Jobs" and he has some videos on his website of the Jamboree. Switchfoot was the main musical attraction.

They had one day with torrential rains and winds but no other bad weather and the second week even cooled off to the 80s from almost 100s the first week. Our Scouts left the Jamboree on Wednesday morning and spent the day at King's Dominion Park enjoying the water park and rides. Thursday they toured Jamestown and Yorktown and Friday they went to the Baltimore Acquarium. Saturday they rode the historic railroad in Maryland before driving home and they arrived around 9pm

The next Jamboree will be in 2013 in West Virginia, new land donated by a Scouting family and looks to be awesome. Get ready to go if you are going to be between the ages of 14 and 17 during that summer.

Welcome back to: Front row-Donald and Alex; back row-Jordan, John and Nick.
