Hike Through Hinckley Reservation

May 8, 2011

The day couldn't be better for a hike through the woods around Hinckley lake. The trail was decent overall, but there were a few muddy sections because of all the rain prior to the hike. The main purpose of the hike was for each scout to learn how to read a topographical map and use a compass on a 5 mile hike for their 2nd Class requirement. The scouts learned these skills by stopping at a series of check points and answering questions using their map and compass. It was a great trip with lots of wildlife to see. Among the sites were a Blue Heron fishing for lunch, several snakes and two rather large snapping turtles right by the shoreline. Hike participants included Abid, Danny, James, Mrs. LaPlante, Mr. Makowski, Mr. Mohideen, and Mr. Steiger.
