Cuyahoga Valley District Camporee
"Pitch in for Scouting"

September 22-24, 2006
Longwood Park
Macedonia, Ohio

This year’s fall camporee was a blast. It was in a new location and not what we were use to, but fun none the less. The theme was pitching. This included golfing at a 2 club golf course, throwing baseballs to tie knots, finding things wrong with a campsite, and finding and identifying objects with our hands. When we arrived there was a constant light fog rain so after setting up camp we had a light snack, reviewed what we needed for the next day, and waited for the big rain to come while sleeping in our tents.

Next morning it was surprisingly clear. We made breakfast ate and reported for the so called flag raising. With the flag raising we just had to line out of the campsite and watched someone pulled an American flag attached to a pole, lifted up from an angle to a full up right position.

Soon afterwards we took the golf clubs we had and went across the street to the golf course. There we split up our patrols and started golfing. When we golfed everyone would hit a ball and from our group we would choose the one we liked the best. Then from that ball that was hit everyone would hit from that spot and keep going until the ball was hit within a two inch radius of the hole.

After the nine holes we headed back to camp where the staff made us lunch which consisted of two hotdogs our choice of chips and a few assorted cookies. In the down time that we had we practiced our knot tying skills and played with some small wooden planes that were complementary from Air BP.

Not too long afterwards the second part of the camporee started. At pitch a knot station one person from the patrol would throw a ball into on of there tiers. If you threw it into the fist tier then you had to tie a knot if you tied it correctly then you would move one base, if you threw it into the second tier then you would have to tie a lashing if you tied it correctly then you move two bases, and finally the big one the third tier any knot if you tied it correctly then it was worth a whopping 3 bases.

Another station was identifying things wrong about a campsite in the middle of winter. That station had a lot of things wrong with it. The other one was identifying scout items in the dark with only one hand a box.

After the events every one went back to the campsite for some down time. When coming to the campsite we noticed the many number of holes that where in the dinning fly. It was from the wind picking up the fly off of the center pole and puncturing the fly when it came back down. This happened about five or six times. When it was time for dinner we boiled corn, potatoes cooked in coals and juicy steak grilled with perfection, love and a little cajun spices. It was really good.

After the clean up from the assume meal we went to ending ceremonies where awards where given out. The Ragging Rams patrol came in ninth place and got t-shirts, and in second place by just half of a point the Screaming eagles who got water bottles.

Back at the campsite we thought it would be a good idea to pack up everything that we would not need for the following morning. From that point on I did not know what happened because I had a horrible migraine and went to bed early. The next morning we took down the tents, had a quick bite to eat and went back home. Members of the troop that "Pitched In" were Alex, David, Donald, Jacob D., Jacob W., John, Kevin, Kurtis, Matthew M., Matt O., Ryan, Steven, Mr. Mayher, Mr. Sewell, and Mrs. Verhovnik. Still looking for pictures if anyone has any...

Trip Plan for Camporee

As the theme implies, the events for this year will require Scouts to "pitch" their way through the competition. The featured event is 9 holes of 2-Club golf (pitching wedge and putter - course is located across the way from Longwood Park) where the Scouts will be required to provide the compass heading to the next hole as well as the distance to selected random holes. (Shotgun start - Scramble)

Golf will be in the AM. 3 other event in the after noon with campsite inspection and gateway judging. Fun campfire Saturday evening. All events will require Scouting skills and fun skills!
