Beaumont Scout Reservation

March 24-26, 2006
Rock Creek, OH

Everyone met in front of the Old Church on Friday, March 24th at 6:00pm, to prepare for the campout. The troop then left after everyone one was ready, except for the Screaming Eagles Patrol, since they were working at the Fish Fry. After everyone arrived at the cabins and set up, they started playing the board game Risk. A little later, the Screaming Eagles Patrol arrived from the Fish Fry and started another game of Risk so that everyone could play. Then, after a snack of cheese and crackers, everyone went to bed.

Saturday morning everyone had breakfast, for what it was worth, and then the older scouts worked with the younger scouts on their rank advancement. Mr. Makowski then showed the younger scouts how to raise and lower the flag. Later that morning, the patrols were called together by a fire pit behind the cabin, and Steven, David, DJ, and Jacob refreshed the older scouts and taught the younger scouts how to properly work with an ax, hatchet, and a hand saw. Next the patrols competed in a fire building contest to see which patrol could build a fire the fastest. The Raging Rams and the Penguins were joined together for the campout, and they called themselves the Raging Penguins. After both patrols had gathered all their wood, the clock was started and the two patrols, the Screaming Eagles and the Raging Penguins, raced to get their fires going. The objective was to build a fire to burn through 2 strings, one 3 feet off the ground and the second 3 1/2 feet off the ground. The first Patrol to do so with only 3 matches would win the competition. The Raging Penguins got off to a quick start and got their fire going within minutes after starting the competition. But as we found out, they made a foolish mistake in their hurriedness. They didn't check to make sure their fire was located under the strings, and instead of burning through the string, the fire barely singed it. Shortly after, the Screaming Eagles got their fire going, and it shot up even faster than the Raging Penguins fire and quickly burned though the ropes, winning the competition. Afterwards, everyone went back to the cabin for lunch.

After lunch, everyone went on a hike around the Beaumont Reservation. Everyone had fun, except for Mr. Sewell, who slipped into a small river formed from all the snow Beaumont Reservation had received. With one leg soaked with water, Mr. Sewell and some of the younger scouts hiked back to camp as Mr. Makowski, Mr. Mayher, and the older scouts stayed to finish the hike. Then, when the hike was over, the patrols started to prepare dinner. The Raging Penguins ate grilled cheese, and the Screaming Eagles ate tacos. After the delicious meal, everyone settled down and watched the movie October Sky. Then, as everyone got ready for bed, we watched the movie Remember the Titans. Sunday morning was quick, as everyone packed up. After a breakfast of Pop Tarts and "Donates," the gear was packed up, the cabin was cleaned, and everyone hit the road. We reached the Old Church at 10:00 a.m., with everyone happy and satisfied with the weekend's outing. Visiting for the day were Alex, Donald, and Mr. Day. Cabin campers were Chris B., Chris C., David, DJ, Jacob, John, Kurtis, Matthew, Nick, Peter(1), Ryan, Steven, Will(0), Mr. Makowski, Mr. Mayher, and Mr. Sewell.

Screaming Eagles begin playing a game of Risk.

Hey, are you awake?

Risk isn't just for the young.

The chef indicates the creator of a rather messy frying pan. Sure looks yummy.

Patrols work to finish breakfast on time.

Fire building contest.

Still working on that fire!

I wonder which patrol is going to win!
