Camp Avery Hand
May 2-4, 2008
Mansfield, Ohio
The
troop departed for Camp Avery Hand on schedule and had an
uneventful trip to camp. We checked in and went to setup
camp in the Sioux camp site. It was a nice site with pine
trees and plenty of open space to put our tents and
dining fly. In a few short hours camp was setup and in
pretty good shape. We built a campfire and brought in
wood from the surrounding area. After settling in it was
time for some Apple Cobbler made in a dutch oven. The
group sang a few songs, put on a skit or two and told
jokes around the fire. Soon enough it was time for bed so
everyone turned in for a peaceful night and some well
deserved rest. In the morning the group cooked scrambled
eggs and canadian bacon for breakfast, while the adult
patrol had pancakes and sausage. Clean up took longer
than expected and the rain began to come down slow and
steady. We then took a hike to see other parts of the
camp. There was a lot to see and we even found some wild
onions to add to our lunch and supper. Most were a bit
tired and on the damp side after the hike so we took a
short break and then made lunch. Some of the members
worked on advancement and others relaxed. The rain picked
up while we were doing cleanup. At one point there was a
heavy downpour that seemed to come from every direction.
It was shortlived and then the sun came out to start
drying things off. After the rain it was time to get in some fishing. We hiked over to Clear Fork resevoir and found a small cove to fish from. John caught a small Bluegill in this area, but since there wasn't much room to fish with all the trees, we decided to hike over to a bridge. Nothing was biting and it was time to head back for supper. A good meal was prepared including spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread, and kool aid. There was quite a mess afterward that seemed to take forever to clean up. Most were pretty tired after the days activities and decided to turn in. Others stayed around the campfire for a short time and then headed off to bed. In the morning we packed up our gear, had a quick breakfast of Oatmeal and Hot Chocolate, then it was time for the trip home. It was a relaxing trip with a flexible schedule. Those enjoying the great outdoors were Douglas, Greg, Jacob, John, Matthew B., Theo, Mr. Makowski and Mr. Mayher. |
